Cecil Farris Bryant was born on July 26, 1914, in Marion County, Florida. He was educated in business and law at the University of Florida and Harvard University. He served in the Navy from 1942-1945. He served in the Florida House of Representatives, and was elected governor in 1960. Bryant worked to improve funding for higher education, began construction of the Cross Florida Barge Canal, reorganized the State Road Department, and completed work on the Sunshine State Parkway.
